All parents/guardians of students, faculty, and staff are members of the Parent/Faculty/Staff Association known as PFSA. The purposes of PFSA are:

  • to facilitate communication between parents/guardians of students, faculty, staff, and Board of Trustees of the school;
  • to provide supplemental funds for the school through various fundraising events;
  • to facilitate the establishment and maintenance of an effective learning environment for Overlake students, and
  • to support the school and its programs.

Parent Education Seminars:

September 28, 2009 – Dr. Jody McVittie

From Management to Leadership: Building Lasting Relationships with your Student(s)

An enthusiastic and energetic parent educator, Dr. McVittie worked as a family doctor for over a decade and has taught parenting since 1995. Using her Positive Discipline tools, parents and teachers can effect powerful, constructive changes in their families and classrooms.

“Parenting as Coaching: How to Connect with Your Children’s Hearts and Minds” 

Two veteran therapists and parenting experts will tackle the following topics in this seminar:

·        The secrets of motivation and keeping site of the goals of parenting

·        Meeting the changing needs of your developing child, and helping them to   meet their own needs

·        Supplying a safe place to fall or fail and helping them build resiliency

·        Talking so your kids will listen, and listening so your kids will talk

·        Fostering fun and a climate for healthy activities in your family

 

November 8, 2009 – A Panel of Experts (see description below)

“Technology and Parenting”

Come hear a panel of experts, including two Overlake parents, discuss and answer your questions about the following topics:

·        Tips on regulating screen-time in and out of your home;

·        Digital social networking (Facebook, Formspring, etc.);

·        Texting, sexting, and the risks of digital permanence;

·        Parenting a World of Warcraft (or other MMORPG) avatar;

·        Warning signs of gaming/Internet addiction and how to treat it;

·        Overlake’s acceptable use policy regarding campus computers;

·        Technological competencies and technology’s impact on thinking and social relations. 

Panelists include: Dr. Hilarie Cash, LMHC and expert in Gaming/Internet Addictions; Lisa Christian, an active Overlake parent and entrepreneur, formerly at Microsoft; Tom Frizelle, Director of Technology at The Overlake School; and, Harley Rosnow, an active Overlake parent and software design manager at Microsoft.
