Faculty

Hours

The library staff is available during the following hours to assist students and faculty:

7:20 - 5:30 on Monday through Thursday; 7:30 – 4:45 on Friday.

Staffing

Cheryl Steele              Head Librarian, Department Chair, 6th Grade Advisor, Teacher

Rebecca Moore           Librarian, Teacher, cataloging services

Karen Wright              Library assistant in charge of circulation and technical services

Circulation of library materials

Books, videos and back issues of periodicals are circulated to faculty for the year, though we request that you return materials you are not using. Please stop by the circulation counter to check out all materials.  Current issues of periodicals circulate for one week to faculty and may be routed to you as they arrive in the library.  See the attached list of periodical titles.

All reference materials may be borrowed for only one block or overnight.

Students may keep library materials for four weeks.  There are no library fines.  Everything is due four weeks after check-out; an overdue list is e-mailed weekly to advisors.  We would appreciate advisors’ help in getting students to return books or to encourage students to see the library staff to renew books or discuss what to do about lost items.

While the library does not charge fines for overdue books, faculty, staff and students are responsible for the replacement cost of items lost or damaged.  In addition, a $15.00 per item processing fee is charged.

Audio-Visual Equipment and Materials

Overhead projectors may be checked out from the library for the year.  Please let the staff know if you give your projector to another teacher.

Call Karen, Cheryl, or Rebecca to reserve slide projectors, digital cameras, tape recorders and laptop computers.

Karen Wright              ext. 648           Cheryl Steele               ext. 647

Rebecca Moore           ext. 649

The library has a video collection and art history slides to support and supplement the school’s curriculum.  See the library staff for the list of titles.

Netflix

The Library uses Netflix to augment the library’s DVD collection. The Netflix  Service offers access to DVDs we do not own,  and  provides the opportunity to preview titles before they are purchased by the library.   If you have any questions about this service, please contact Cheryl at csteele@overlake.org  or call ext.647.

How it works:

1.       Find a DVD you want to borrow from Netflix by searching their catalog at

http://www.netflix.com/BrowseSelection

2.      Send your request to:  netflix@overlake.org   Include the date(s) you want to use DVD.

3.       Library Staff will put the DVD in your box in the Faculty Room when it arrives.

4.      Faculty is asked to mail the DVD back to Netflix as soon possible as we are limited to 4 DVDs at a time.

Details:

·         Purpose--DVDs requested are to be used for Overlake instructional purposes only.

·         Number of Requests--For the time being, we are limited to four simultaneous Netflix rentals. Teachers are limited to one Netflix request at a time.

·         Check out time--The DVD should be mailed back to Netflix  within 8 days .  You will have use of the DVD for 7 days.

·         Pickup and Return--The library staff will put the DVDs in faculty boxes.  Teachers will put the DVD in U.S. mail (in Faculty Room) after the DVD has been shown.

·         Turn Around Time--The library staff will process as soon as possible, but cannot guarantee delivery  time stated by Netflix.

New Acquisitions

Every month the library distributes a list of new library acquisitions.  If there is an item on the list that interests you let us know, we will check it out to you and put it in your mailbox.

The library staff is available to support what you do as a teacher.  We purchase materials that relate to the school’s curriculum but rely heavily on teacher requests.  Please let us know if there are titles and subject areas that need focus in our purchasing.

Use of the library

If you would like to bring a class to the library to use our resources you must schedule your visit with the library staff.  Seating is limited and we can’t accommodate more than two classes at a time.  Please provide the library staff with any information you have (handouts, research requirements, due date etc.) regarding the assignment that the students will be working on.  The librarians would be happy to put together bibliographies, pull books for a reserve shelf and work with the students on research strategies, evaluating information and using the on-line resources.

We do not allow students to bring food or beverages (except in a bottle with a screw-top lid) into the library.  If you must bring in your coffee cup or food please leave it in our library workroom while you are in the library during school hours.  Food and beverages are allowed in the library during faculty meetings and special events.

Attached is a list of Library Behavior Expectations.  Please share this information with your advisees.

Library Events

The Library runs a number of programs and contests for Middle School students, including The Hoot, the Middle School Literary magazine. For a full list of Library contests, see the Middle School Activities webpage.

Library Computer Lab Signups

Students

Overlake Library

The library is the academic heart of the school.  It operates as a resource center for all departments in the school and provides support for the curriculum and general learning.  The library strives to provide the school community with quality resources, services and facilities.

The collection currently includes 20,000 volumes, providing a variety of print and non-print materials which encourage the learning process.  Numerous periodicals are available, including foreign language publications and international magazines and newspapers.  The library has a networked automated catalog, a library services web page, numerous on-line databases, audio-visual materials and other resources for student use.  Public library databases are available to students who have public library cards, which the library recommends. We offer instruction in the use of these resources. In addition, computers are available for students who wish to do word-processing, access e-mail and make use of other computer applications.

The library instructional program is designed to develop confident, independent library users and processors of information.   The librarians teach library research and reference skills at all grade levels in conjunction with student projects and research papers.

Students are always welcome in the library for quiet study, computer use, research, and recreational reading.  The library staff is available to assist students Monday - Thursday from 7:20 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  The library remains open until 4:45 p.m. on Friday.
